AWS Systems Manager Session Manager

AWS Systems Manager Session Manager is a fully managed node management capability that enables cloud administrators and developers to initiate secure, auditable, and browser-based shell access to Amazon EC2 instances, on-premises servers, and virtual machines without requiring inbound SSH ports, bastion hosts, or public IP addresses. Operating entirely through the outbound AWS Systems Manager (SSM) agent, Session Manager eliminates the operational overhead and security risks associated with managing static SSH keys and perimeter jump servers.

The capability authenticates and authorizes connections through AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), allowing organizations to enforce granular, role-based access controls, multi-factor authentication, and temporary session credentials rather than distributing private PEM files to individual engineers. Session Manager encrypts interactive session traffic end-to-end using TLS and provides comprehensive logging capabilities: administrators can automatically capture complete command keystroke histories and stream interactive session logs directly to Amazon S3 buckets or Amazon CloudWatch Logs for real-time security auditing. It also supports port forwarding for private database connections and non-interactive command execution through the AWS CLI.

Major enterprise use cases include replacement of public bastion jump hosts, centralized administrative access auditing, least-privilege instance troubleshooting, secure private database tunneling, and continuous compliance verification against SOC 2 and ISO 27001 standards. By decoupling interactive server access from traditional network perimeters, Session Manager enforces robust Zero Trust access controls across hybrid cloud infrastructures.
