AWS Secrets Manager

AWS Secrets Manager is a fully managed secrets management service engineered to help organizations protect, retrieve, and automatically rotate sensitive credentials, API keys, database passwords, and cryptographic secrets throughout their operational lifecycle. By replacing hardcoded credentials embedded within application source code with dynamic, programmatic API retrievals, Secrets Manager eliminates the primary cause of credential leaks and drastically improves enterprise cloud security postures.

The service provides built-in, automated credential rotation for popular managed database services—including Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, and Amazon DocumentDB—using pre-configured AWS Lambda rotation functions that update secrets in the database and Secrets Manager simultaneously without application downtime. For custom third-party systems, OAuth tokens, and SaaS API keys, organizations can define tailored Lambda rotation workflows. All stored secrets are encrypted at rest using customer-managed or AWS-managed keys in AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS) and protected in transit using TLS. Fine-grained IAM policies and resource-based access policies govern secret access down to individual API calls, while continuous integration with AWS CloudTrail delivers non-repudiable auditing of every credential request and rotation event.
