AWS IAM

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) is the foundational identity, authentication, and authorization service that enables cloud administrators to securely control access to Amazon Web Services resources and APIs. Through fine-grained access management policies, AWS IAM allows organizations to specify who or what can access specific cloud assets, which operations can be executed, and under what contextual conditions. Operating at the core of the AWS security architecture, the service enforces least-privilege security principles across all human users, automated workloads, and federated identities.

The service provides essential identity primitives, including IAM users, user groups, IAM roles, and permission policies written in declarative JSON syntax. IAM roles enable temporary credential delegation for compute resources like Amazon EC2 instances, AWS Lambda functions, and containerized tasks, eliminating the risk of embedding long-term access keys within application code. Organizations can enforce comprehensive governance boundaries using Service Control Policies (SCPs) across AWS Organizations, Permission Boundaries on delegated admins, and Session Policies during role assumption. AWS IAM also features the IAM Policy Simulator and comprehensive credential reporting, allowing security teams to audit active access keys, identify unused credentials, and test permissions before deployment.

Core enterprise use cases include least-privilege cloud access control, workload credential federation, temporary session token generation, cross-account access delegation, and security compliance auditing. By providing robust, granular authorization controls across every AWS API invocation, AWS IAM forms the indispensable security perimeter for cloud operations.
