About TruffleHog

TruffleHog (developed by Truffle Security) is an open-source and enterprise-grade secret scanning and credential leak prevention engine designed to uncover exposed API keys, passwords, private cryptographic keys, and database tokens across source code repositories, CI/CD pipelines, cloud storage, and internal chat applications. While traditional secret scanners rely merely on regular expressions that trigger overwhelming volumes of false-positive alerts, TruffleHog features active credential verification: the scanner automatically validates discovered API keys by making safe, read-only requests against corresponding provider endpoints (such as AWS, GitHub, Slack, and Stripe) to confirm whether the credential is live and active. TruffleHog Enterprise extends this engine across an organization's entire software development ecosystem, continuously scanning GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Confluence, Slack, and S3 buckets for exposed secrets. The scanner operates as a pre-commit hook that blocks developers from committing secrets locally, or within CI/CD pipelines to prevent compromised code from reaching production. TruffleHog provides engineering and cybersecurity teams with a verified, automated solution for eliminating hardcoded credentials and mitigating devastating data breaches.
