About Tailscale

Tailscale is a zero-configuration mesh VPN and secure networking platform built on the modern WireGuard protocol that allows organizations to create encrypted, point-to-point software-defined networks across distributed infrastructure and remote devices. Traditional hub-and-spoke enterprise VPNs introduce bandwidth bottlenecks, complex firewall configurations, single points of failure, and latency overhead by backhauling traffic through centralized concentrators. Tailscale eliminates these drawbacks by establishing direct, peer-to-peer WireGuard tunnels between verified devices, forming an encrypted private overlay network called a 'tailnet.' Devices authenticate through existing corporate identity providers—including Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID, and Okta—ensuring that multi-factor authentication and identity policies are enforced at every connection. Tailscale manages cryptographic key distribution and NAT traversal automatically using STUN and DERP relays, connecting remote developer laptops, cloud VPC servers, Raspberry Pi units, and on-premises databases without requiring open inbound firewall ports or port forwarding. Security teams control network connectivity through centralized, declarative Access Control Lists (ACLs) defined as code in JSON or HuJSON, enforcing strict least-privilege microsegmentation across subnets. Tailscale provides seamless, high-speed encrypted connectivity that simplifies remote work infrastructure and accelerates secure DevOps operations.
