About GitHub Secret Protection
GitHub Secret Protection provides real-time defense against accidental credential exposure by proactively scanning commits and repositories for leaked tokens, private keys, API secrets, and sensitive credentials before they are permanently exposed. Leaked credentials represent one of the most common vectors for cloud account compromise and data breaches, often occurring when developers mistakenly commit private configuration files to source repositories. GitHub Secret Protection introduces push protection, which intercepts `git push` commands directly in the developer terminal or web editor, evaluating outbound code against hundreds of partner and custom regex patterns. If a known secret pattern is identified, the push is immediately blocked until the developer removes the credential or obtains authorized administrative bypass. In addition to push protection, the service continuously scans historical git commit histories, wiki pages, issues, and pull request discussions to flag existing leaks. GitHub collaborates with hundreds of cloud and SaaS providers—including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Stripe—to validate detected tokens and trigger automated revocation requests. By eliminating secret leaks at the moment of code creation, GitHub Secret Protection hardens software supply chains, prevents credential hijacking, and ensures compliance with enterprise security baselines.
